Echoes of Heritage: A Spatial Symphony

An architectural journey through the confluence of tradition and innovation, where space becomes a canvas for cultural dialogue.

AD Government Office

Nestled beneath a dramatic, undulating roof, the AD Government Office emerges as a testament to the harmonious interplay between past and present. Perched atop a venerable heritage building, this space serves as the heart of a government body that navigates the realm of public projects while hosting workshops and exhibitions. Yet, the essence of this architectural endeavor lies not merely in its functional capacity but in its profound exploration of space, presence, and the metaphysical embrace of its genius loci. The challenge of accommodating fluctuating office occupancy, due to the ebb and flow of external consultants, demanded a rediscovery of the building's inherent architectural qualities. In a dance of creative archaeology, clarity was restored to the once underutilized space through the addition of volumes that reverently echo the building's architectural proportions. The design narrative is a reflection of an organization poised between the forward-looking aspirations of the future and the deep-rooted traditions of Emirati heritage. The original brief, a call for open workspaces, private offices, and meeting rooms, expanded threefold, evolving into a dynamic environment that accommodates flexible working areas, a boardroom, a library, prayer rooms, a hot desking zone, and phone booths. As the ambitions of the space exceeded its physical boundaries, vertical expansion became the canvas for innovation. Functional platforms, interconnected by staircases, weave a tapestry of spatial narratives, each level a chapter in the unfolding story. A volume of mild steel graces the entrance, bridging the exhibition level with a meeting lounge and prayer room, accessible through an elegantly diverging staircase. This formidable yet graceful presence conceals a ladies' prayer room and office, crowned by a smaller cube, half its size and opacity, adorned with suspended aluminium chains. This sculptural beacon not only signals the entrance but orchestrates a symphony of order amidst the myriad geometries of the original structure. The complexity of this architectural tapestry unveils unexpected benefits. Multiple entry points, a testament to its design genius, offer varied journeys for its inhabitants. Dignitaries may ascend directly to the exhibition area via the lift, descending into the boardroom, or be graciously welcomed with refreshments in the workshop area, all while preserving the sanctity of the open office. The material palette, a harmonious blend of branding and design, celebrates the creational power of words, manifested through bold red accents against the neutral tones of paper and sand. The interplay of contrasting materials, from rough plaster to the woven elegance of safeefah, paired with the sleek patina of mild steel, crafts a narrative that is both tactile and visual. In lieu of resisting the irregular shapes, inspiration was drawn from them, crafting a nesting system for pantry tables within a narrow, curved expanse. Flexibility reigns supreme, as the space is molded to accommodate diverse teams, its spanning structures supporting partitions and reconfigurable modules: acoustic pinup boards, magnetic whiteboards, and storage units. Furniture design allows for seamless adaptation to groups of varying sizes, fostering collaboration and innovation. A testament to design ingenuity, the air-conditioning outlets remain artfully concealed, save for existing totems on the exhibition level, their minimalist timber grid a nod to sustainability. Washrooms, a study in privacy, are divided diagonally, adorned with free-standing vanities that eschew airlocks. Locally crafted vanity mirrors, a fusion of translucence, reflection, and matte surfaces, stand as a testament to meticulous craftsmanship. Executive areas, defined by the chameleon-like properties of switchable glass, shift between transparency and opacity with ease. The delicate glow of super-thin LED light strings, spanning an impressive 17 meters, illuminates spaces where traditional recess lighting dares not tread. Gravelled roofs, once inaccessible, are transformed into breakout areas, inviting moments of reflection and respite. Prayer rooms, ablution areas, and nursing rooms find their place within this architectural opus. The guiding ethos of the client, a mission to be "focused on our people and grounded by our human values," is woven into the very fabric of the design. Daylight, a celestial muse, is courted with reverence, its unobstructed flow a deliberate choice. The entrance volume, a translucent prayer room, stands testament to this commitment, one of two prayer spaces crafted in response to the mosque's distant embrace. The open workspace, a fluid entity, adapts as teams delve into diverse projects. An erstwhile intrusive ledge along the principal façade is reborn as a linear majlis meeting room, modular seating poised atop its length. Impromptu exchanges, the lifeblood of creativity, are encouraged by an abundance of lounges and meeting areas, while scattered phone booths offer moments of solitude. Acoustics, a symphony of absorptive walls and ceilings, tailored to the aesthetics of each space, are complemented by free-standing acoustic panels. Local production, a nod to community support, defines the furniture choices, with Emirati artisans crafting cushions in the traditional sadu technique. The reception volume and staircases, forged from recycled mild steel by a local artisan, stand as a testament to the beauty of sustainability. Acoustic glass partitions, locally produced, further echo this commitment. The decision to eschew additional ceilings above open offices minimizes material waste, allowing daylight to weave its magic. FSC-certified timber and recycled wood wool grace the corridors, an ode to the poetry of sustainable architecture.
